2025 CM Hocking Memorial Scholarship recipient

Herefords Australia is proud to announce that Andrew Tulloch of Stratford, VIC is the recipient of the $5,000 CM Hocking Memorial Scholarship for 2025.

The scholarship was presented to Andrew by Herefords Australia CEO Hamish Chandler at the Future Leaders & Breeders industry dinner in Tamworth on Thursday, 6 November.

Over the past 10 years, Andrew has built his own beef herd, including Hereford and Hereford-influenced cattle, and has recently established a 50-head feedlot, with capacity to grow to 150 head. He also has a long-standing affiliation with the Mawarra Genetics Hereford Stud, assisting with all aspects of cattle work, particularly the preparation of bulls for their annual sale.

In his scholarship application, Andrew highlighted key opportunities for the Hereford breed, emphasising the importance of promoting its versatility and performance across both grass- and grain-fed production systems. He noted that feedlot performance data, MSA results, and word-of-mouth promotion are vital in demonstrating the breed’s merit. While breeders have achieved significant genetic progress in recent years, Andrew believes continued focus on selecting EBVs that enhance eating quality will be essential, particularly if the industry moves toward value-based marketing, where prices reflect the merit of individual animals or cuts.

Andrew is committed to ongoing learning and professional development. Attending events, such as the Herefords Australia Future Leaders & Breeders Study Tour, has helped build his knowledge of the industry and with the scholarship funds, he is particularly excited to further his understanding of advanced breeding technologies, including AI, sexed semen, and embryo transfers, through research and training with companies like ST Genetics.

Please join us in congratulating Andrew on this well-deserved award and his commitment to continuing to build on the already strong Hereford breed in Australia, promoting the use of Hereford genetics in both purebred and crossbred herds to strengthen the breed’s influence and performance across the industry.
