CEO Update July

The past month has been particularly rewarding for the Herefords Australia team, with a focus on engagement across all areas of our community – from youth development through to producer recognition.

Successful Youth Expo in Canberra
From 10–13 July, we were proud to support and attend the 2025 Herefords Australia Youth Expo held in Canberra. Despite the near arctic conditions, the event brought together a fantastic group of more than 135 enthusiastic young cattlemen and women from across the country. It was wonderful to see the next generation of our breed so committed to learning, networking and showcasing their cattle. A huge thank you to the youth committee, volunteers, sponsors and families who made the Expo such a success.

Youth Programs: Building a Strong Future for Herefords

The future of Herefords is in great hands! We’ve recently announced some exciting changes to our youth programs to ensure young breeders feel supported, respected and empowered.

We’ve improved transparency with clear tracking of youth finances, with all youth fundraising and sponsorship continuing to be ring‑fenced for youth activities only. Our Youth Sub‑Committee will now play an even bigger leadership role, including drafting Youth Expo budgets, planning future events and programs, and having a stronger voice in decision‑making. A new Youth Executive Chair role has also been created to represent youth at HAL Board meetings when required – opening a clear leadership pathway right through to Board level. All Youth committee members, responsibilities or positions remain unchanged, other than the current Youth Sub-Committee Chair position title becomes Executive Officer. These changes have been guided by member feedback and as part of this evolution, we sincerely thank and farewell Youth Coordinator Nikki Martin for her passionate contribution, her legacy will continue to inspire the next generation of Hereford leaders.

Expression of Interest in the new Youth Executive Chair role are now welcomed – don’t miss out on this great opportunity.

Member Visits – Southeastern South Australia
I also had the opportunity this month to visit members in the southeastern region of South Australia. These visits are always a highlight, providing the chance to hear directly from members about their programs, priorities and plans for the future. The insights gathered during these visits are invaluable in shaping how Herefords Australia can continue to support our breeders.

RMA Network Conference – Adelaide, 23–25 July
The RMA Network Conference held in Adelaide at the end of July was another excellent opportunity to connect with agents, industry stakeholders and service providers. There is strong interest across the beef sector in the continued growth and performance of Hereford genetics, and events such as these are a great forum to build those relationships.

Looking Ahead – Ekka and Producer Recognition
Next week, I look forward to attending the Paddock to Palate Awards at the Ekka (Royal Queensland Show). These awards showcase the role genetics and management play in producing high quality beef, and it’s fantastic to see our breed represented among the competitors.

We are also proud to be sponsoring the JBS Producer of the Year event again this year. Recognising excellence in beef production aligns strongly with Herefords Australia’s values, and we’re delighted to support an initiative that celebrates innovation and performance in the supply chain.

Future Leaders & Breeders Study Tour

We’re excited to share that the 2025 Future Leaders & Breeders Study Tour is heading to Tamworth, NSW from 5-7 November 2025! This national event is designed to give young people a hands-on, behind-the-scenes look at the beef industry, from abattoirs and feedlots to commercial Hereford operations. Attendees will engage directly with key parts of the supply chain, build practical skills, and connect with industry leaders and peers. It’s an unmissable opportunity for anyone passionate about beef, leadership, and learning. Start planning by registering your interest now!

Thank you to all members for your ongoing support. I look forward to catching up with many of you over the coming weeks.
