We are pleased to announce that Herefords Australia (HAL) are streamlining the DNA testing process for our members. As of October 2024, members can send their DNA samples directly to the lab rather than to the HAL office.
FAQ’s
How do I get my samples tested?
- Download the DNA Test Request Spreadsheet from the HAL website. Fill in the spreadsheet and email it to registrar@herefordsaustralia.com.au
- WAIT for HAL to email you a DNA Request Acknowledgement letter.
- Print the Acknowledgement letter and attach all samples.
- Post to: Neogen Australasia, 14 Hume Drive, Bundamba, Ipswich QLD 4304
Why has the DNA testing process changed?
At the request of members, HAL have worked with Neogen to allow samples to go directly from the member to the lab to help make the process more efficient. HAL will also undergo major database changes in 2025 and this is a step towards a smooth transition for staff and members.
This changed process helps to mitigates risk and has many benefits to members.
What benefits will this change have for members?
- Sending samples directly to lab saves extra postage time – Samples are only going through Australia Post once, rather than twice.
- When members write their information onto a paper form, HAL staff have to re-enter this information into our database. This process will save double handling, which will save time and reduce errors.
- DNA requests will continue to be processed even if staff are away from the office, as it can now be processed by remote staff as well.
- A similar spreadsheet was previously available on our website which many members were already using.
- DNA Test Request worksheet has an Instructions tab at the bottom for help.
Will I get my results faster?
This changed process will not speed up test results. Members might see their results a few days earlier because samples are only going through Australia Post once rather than twice, but it won’t make a difference to the amount of time the lab needs to physically run the tests. Test will still take 4-6 weeks to process.
The spreadsheet only allows for four possible Sires and Dams. What if I want to verify my calf to more than four?
There is only room on the spreadsheet for four possible parents. When you send your spreadsheet to registrar@herefordsaustralia.com.au, include in your email a list of any other possible sires and dams that you’d like your calf verified to and HAL will notify the lab.
I don’t like the layout of the spreadsheet. Can I change the columns around?
Please do not add, move or delete columns in the DNA spreadsheet. It is important data is kept in this format so that it can be imported directly into the HAL database without being edited.
The spreadsheet is a template developed by ABRI. This same template is used by many different breed societies in many different countries who are sending DNA to many different labs. The format cannot be changed.
I’m having trouble viewing the DNA Spreadsheet.
You may experience trouble accessing the DNA Spreadsheet if you are using an Apple device (e.g. iPad or mac computer). You will need to go to your App store and download Microsoft Excel.
