Restockers chasing quality Hereford females and yearling steers top at $2060

Vendors were greeted by a cheaper market in the nationwide store sales during February but quality autumn calving Hereford cows topped at $2980 and grass fed yearling steers sold to a top of $2060.

Heavy grown Hereford steers returned $1560-$1945 or 372-407c/kg, feeder steers averaged $1860 or 417c/kg, and yearling steers made $1457-$2060 or 368-434c/kg.

In the weaner steers, those weighing over 350kg returned $1165-$1762 or 314-430c/kg, those weighing 280-350kg finished at $1058-$1655 or 385-512c/kg and lighter weights under 280kg settled at $1055-$1395 or 428-525c/kg.

In the weaner heifers, those weighing over 350kg returned $1215-$1643 or 352-408c/kg and those under 350kg sold for $870-$1620 or 340-587c/kg. Yearling heifers made $1280-$1610 or 362-456c/kg, PTIC autumn calving heifers sold for $1720-$2840, and PTIC cows made $2310-$2980.

Unjoined Hereford cows with calves sold for $2025-$2310 while first calf heifers and calves returned $2020-$2400.

At the Wangaratta Livestock Exchange heifer weaner sale, Feruccio Tonini, Glenrowan, sold weaned heifers, 357kg, for $1460 or 408c/kg, Koombahla Vineyard sold heifers weighing 314kg, 12 to 14 months, for $1290 or 410c/kg, Danetree Herefords, Wooragee, sold heifers, 291kg and nine to 10 months, for $1320 or 453c/kg and D and K Gaudion sold heifers 312kg, 11 to 12 months, for $1200 or 384c/kg. The Russell family sold heifers, 12 to 14 months and 325kg, for $1485 or 456c/kg and their seconds weighing 289kg for $1285 or 444c/kg. M and L Murtagh sold heifers, 325kg and nine to 10 months, for $1300 or 400c/kg and Hunters Run sold heifers weighing 223kg, 10 months, for $1030 or 461c/kg. In the lightweights, the Tonini family sold heifers, 162kg, five to six months, for $870 or 537c/kg.

At the Wangaratta Livestock Exchange steer weaner sale, yearling steers topped at $2060 or 406c/kg for a pen aged 17 to 18 months, and weighing 507kg from Ross Backlund. R Warner topped the weaner pens with steers aged nine to 10 months and weighing 339kg, returning $1655 or 488c/kg while G and D Comerford sold steers aged 10 to 11 months and weighing 334kg for $1590 or 476c/kg.

The Blue Ribbon weaner sale at Wangaratta resulted in Danetree Herefords selling 339kg steers for $1650 or 487c/kg.

At Wodonga store sale, a consignment of 600 weaners, Wirruna blood, from Tarabah Livestock, Holbrook, saw the top pen of 51 weighing 241kg making 456c/kg or $1100, and a second pen of 131 weighing 213kg sold for 495c/kg or $1055.

Ruthven Family Trust, Brit Brit, sold Wilkah blood cows, three to seven years, PTIC to Wilkah Quest Q011 and 708kg, for $2980. They were March calving over an eight-week period.

Colly Creek, Condah, sold Banool, Cabunga and Cudal blood cows, four to 11 years, PTIC to an Ennerdale bull and 639kg, for $2310.

At the WVLX Mortlake February store sale, Wypanda Company Pty Ltd sold weaner steers, eight to nine months, 372kg, for 430c/kg or $1600, the seconds weighing 327kg for 500c/kg or $1635 and the thirds at 278kg for 502c/kg or $1395. Cragnor sold steers, eight to nine months, 280kg, for 428c/kg or $1344 and J Emerson sold heavy weaners, 402kg, nine to 10 months, for 400c/kg or $1608. Wolbinya Pastoral sold stees, 362kg, 11 to 12 months, and Spring Run blood, for 410c/kg or $1484 and the seconds weighing 275kg for 385c/kg or $1058. Barry Lynch sold Glendan Park blood steers, 9-10 months, 316kg, for 442c/kg or $1397 while C Brian sold Jaclinton blood steers, 11 to 12 months, 409kg, for 402c/kg or $1644.

The heifer portion from Wypanda weighed 360kg, eight to nine months, returned 382c/kg or $1375 and those from Cragnor weighing 280kg made 382c/kg or $1069. J Humphries sold heifers, 14 to 16 months, and 375kg for 380c/kg or $1425 and Eden Pastoral sold heifers 10-11 months, Rosstulla blood, and 298kg for 385c/kg or $1147.

At the Hamilton store cattle sale, R and L Baulch sold grown steers, 20 to 24 months and 484kg, for 402c/kg or $1945. South Barnoolut sold weaner steers, Yarram Park and Russlyn blood, 10 to 11 months, 432kg, for 408c/kg or $1762 and the seconds weighing 371kg for 314c/kg or $1165. T Payne sold yearling steers, Melville Park blood, 16 to 18 months, and 446kg, for 404c/kg or $1801. Cherrymount Partnership sold yearling steers, 406kg and 16 months, for 410c/kg or $1664.

In the heifer pens, South Barnoolut sold Yarram Park and Russlyn heifers, 10 to 11 months, and 444kg, for 370c/kg or $1643.

Lucy McEachern, Spring Run Herefords, Wingeel, sold weaner heifers, nine to 10 months, online to a top of $1620 or 587c/kg. R and D Aumann, Warrenbayne, sold PTIC heifers, 400kg, Wirruna blood, and 16 to 17 months, for $1720. Maree Paton, Tallangatta, sold a draft of 42 PTIC cows, Newcomen and Mawarra blood, 694-713kg, 3.5 to 4.5 years, for $2700.

Whispering Valley Poll Herefords, Euroa, sold steers, 247kg and nine to 10 months, for $1300 or 525c/kg and a heavier pen at 347kg, 12 to 13 months, at $1500 or 432c/kg. G and A Murtagh, Mudgegonga, sold Yavenvale blood weaned steers, 304kg and eight to nine months, for $1400 or 459c/kg.

At Bairnsdale store sale P and D Marshall, Orbost, sold steers, 318kg, for $1440 while C and J Cooper, Wulgulmerang, sold heifers, rising three years, PTIC to Hereford bulls for a March calving, for $2840.

Heading north across the border to NSW and Barry Bolam sold cows, three to six years, with calves for $2275 at the Forbes February store sale while Riverview Pastoral sold steers, eight to nine months and 281kg, for $1440 or 512c/kg.

P and J Woodhouse, Quandialla, sold unjoined heifers, Injemira blood, 17 to 18 months and 391kg, for $1500 or 383c/kg. Woomargama Station, Woomargama, sold Injemira blood yearling heifers, 16 to 17 months and 369kg, EU and Greenham Never Ever accredited, for $1360 or 367c/kg.

K and Y Williams, Cowra, sold unjoined The Ranch blood cows, six to 10 years and 628kg, with calves, for $2200. G Bright and A Dalgleish, Cooma, sold yearling steers, Kaludah blood, 412kg, and 16 to 17 months, for $1610 or 390c/kg.

Okeview Pastoral, Wantabadgery, sold Yavenvale, Bowen, Cascade and Injemira blood feeder steers, 445kg and 15 to 16 months, for $1860 or 417c/kg while 100 Group Pty Ltd, Book Book, sold unjoined Yavenvale blood heifers, 15 to 16 months, and 386kg, for $1400 or 362c/kg.

Mannus Valley Livestock, Tumbarumba, sold PTIC heifers, 528kg and 28 to 32 months, for $2180. Hayden Orford, Braidwood, sold cows, 443kg and 2.5 years, with calves, for $2310.

Nutrien Livestock on behalf of P Anderson sold Hereford steers, 541kg, for 350c/kg or $1896 at the South Eastern Livestock Exchange. Bontara Merino Stud, Gobarralong, sold Hereford steers, 461kg, for 372c/kg or $1717 and Buckenbowra Pastoral, Mogo, sold steers, 395kg, for 368c/kg or $1457 also at the SELX.

At the Nutrien Classic Cattle sale at Tamworth, B and K Hollis sold steers, 14 to 16 months, and 399kg, for $1630 or 408c/kg, Robert Haking sold 383kg steers, 20 to 22 months, for $1560 or 407c/kg, Pembury Pastoral Co sold steers, 14 to 16 months, and 352kg, for $1530 or 434c/kg and Tycolah Pastoral sold 18-month-old steers weighing 465kg for $1790 or $3.85/kg. In the heifer pens, Jake Marshall sold Herefords, 15 to 17 months and 358kg, for $1405 or 392c/kg and Pembury Pastoral sold unjoined heifers, 15 to 18 months, and 376kg, for $1460 or 388c/kg. Jayden McClymont sold heifers, two years and 440kg, with calves for $2250.

At the Gloucester store sale, Hereford cows and calves produced by the Smith Brothers, Cundle Flat, with Curracabark blood, sold for $2025 whilst PTIC Hereford heifers with Curracabark blood made $2250.

At the Clarence Valley Select Female and Breeder sale, Baryulgil Pastoral Co sold Hereford heifers and calves for $2400, PTIC heifers for $2150 and Hillview Herefords sold heifers, 12 to 14 months, for $1350.

P and N Spice, Gwabegar, sold Rayleigh blood future breeders, 350kg, and 13 to 14 months, for $1215. Centennial blood backgrounder steers weighing 366kg and aged 10 to 11 months, returned $1570 or 428c/kg for Martin Austin, Coolah. His seconds weighing 318kg made $1430 or 449c/kg and his future breeders, 332kg and 10 to 11 months, returned $1220 or 366c/kg.

Canonbar Pastoral and Agtrade Pastoral Company, Nyngan, sold a draft of 56 PTIC heifers, 504kg, 18 to 30 months, for $2600. The heifers had been sourced from southern NSW and Victorian weaner sales, had been AIed to Injemira Robert Redford Q287 and run with an Injemira back up bull.

Heading north to Queensland, A York, Bowenville, sold Days, Injemira and Kroy Park blood cows, four to eight years and 487kg, with Kroy Park blood calves, for $2070. D and K York, Southleigh, Wallumbilla, sold Hereford cross cows to 310c/kg, reaching a top of $1948 to average $1824 at Roma store sale. The Estate of J W Golden, Dragon Creek, Yuleba, sold Hereford cows to 311c/kg reaching a top of $1947 to average $1652 also at Roma.

E Bailey & Co, Guluguba, sold Merawah blood yearling heifers, 359kg, and 14 to 18 months, for $1335 or 376c/kg and the seconds weighing 294kg, 11 to 14 months, for $1015 or 344c/kg. J and D Cowlishaw, Goondiwindi, sold 53 backgrounder steers, Yagaburne blood, 336kg, and 13 to 17 months, for $1400 or 416c/kg.

W Hartwig and K Bliss, Goombungee, sold Ironbark blood heifers, 438kg and 24 to 30 months, with calves for $2020 while Warren Point Pastoral, Mitchell, sold a draft of 38 unjoined heifers, 345kg and 14 to 18 months, for $1280 or 370c/kg. The second pen of 34 weighing 296kg made $1100 or 371c/kg.

At Mt Gambier store sale in South Australia, Avonlea, Strathdownie, sold 488kg steers, 14 to 16 months, to Teys Australia for $1820 or 373c/kg, Walkenny Park, Cape Bridgewater, sold a line of 50 Ardno, Bowmont and Bra-Ma blood steers, 333-368kg, for $1640 or 492c/kg to Nutrien Mt Gambier. Glencairn, Casterton, sold March/April drop, Yarram Park and Injemira blood steers to Green Triangle Livestock at $1310 or 393c/kg.

Across to Western Australia, Glenpennant Farms Pty Ltd sold Hereford heifers, 359kg, 11-12 months, for 352c/kg or $1263 and the seconds weighing 254kg for 350c/kg or $889 at the Nutrien Boyanup February store cattle sale.

Quaindering Herefords, Boyanup, sold heifers, 10 to 12 months and 322kg, for 340c/kg or $1095 at the Elders Boyanup weaner sale. B and K Hart, Toodyay, sold Hereford steers, 328kg and 470c/kg for $1542 at the Muchea sale.

Down to Tasmania, Chester Partnership, Selbourne, sold Quamby Plains blood yearling heifers, 371kg and 16 months, for $1610 or 433c/kg. J Cowen and A Kitto, Bridport, sold PTIC heifers, 518kg, and 27 to 29 months, for $2000.

The Eastern States Young Cattle Indicator continued to fall to 710.7c/kg – down from 784/9c/kg in January.
Meat and Livestock Australia reports indicator prices at February 28 for restocker yearling steers at 421.09c/kg, down from 495.2c/kg in January, and feeder steers at 377.3c/kg, down from 396c/kg while restocker yearling heifers stood at 347.9c/kg.
Heavy steers rose slightly to 347.8c/kg from 340 c/kg in January and processor cows gained ground to 288.29c/kg from 266.2c/kg.
