Strong buyer competition and improving seasonal conditions combined to deliver good results for Hereford producers across western Victoria this week, with pleasing performances at both the Casterton Hereford Weaner Steer Sale and the Hamilton Hereford Weaner Sale on Wednesday 14 January 2026.
The Casterton sale on Wednesday saw approximately 680 Hereford weaner steers yarded through Nutrien and Elders, with values lifting sharply to sit more than 100 cents per kilogram above January 2025 levels. A wide buying gallery ensured consistent competition across the offering, with prices generally ranging from the mid-460s to just over 500c/kg, and very little falling below the 470c/kg mark.
Elders Casterton livestock manager Sam Tooley said the sale went “extremely well”, considering the small number of cattle on offer.
Mr Tooley said the Casterton Hereford sale had built a strong reputation off the back of some excellent local Hereford breeders.
The Champion Pen of Hereford Steers, awarded to Cam and Carol Emerson, Alva Downs, Tahara, whose cattle attracted strong buyer interest and reflected the resilience of quality Hereford genetics through a difficult seasonal start. The Emerson’s sold multiple pens to near 500c/kg, with buyers responding positively to the cattle’s freshness, structure and ability to perform post-weaning.
Major buyer support underpinned the strong result, with active competition from Miller, Whan & John, Mount Gambier and Pinkerton Palm Hamlyn & Steen, Naracoorte sourcing cattle for south-east South Australian clients. Northern demand was also evident, with Nutrien Livestock agent Luke Scicluna, Gunnedah, NSW securing steers for northern backgrounding operations. Local interest remained strong through Nutrien Casterton.
Repeat supporter of the Casterton Hereford sale, Marc Greening, Injemira Beef Genetics, Book Book, NSW, was again in attendance and secured 27 steers, including 15 Injemira and Yarram Park blood, 9–10 month Hereford steers from Glenn and Kylie Davis, Sutherland Hills, Dergholm. The 15 steers were all sired by the renowned Australian Hereford bull Injemira Robert Redford Q287, who set a national breed record in 2021 when he sold for $160,000. The purchase reinforced ongoing confidence in the quality, performance and genetic consistency of cattle offered at the Casterton sale. Long-time supporters J&J Kelly Agents were also active throughout the offering.
Despite lighter average weights across parts of the yarding due to the dry conditions experienced through early growth, vendors consistently noted that a strong spring break had driven noticeable compensatory weight gain, presentation and overall health.
Momentum continued at Hamilton, where Hereford cattle formed the backbone of the yarding at the third day of the western district weaner sales. A total of 2,338 head were penned across the sale, which grossed $3.83 million, returning an average of $1,643 per head or 488c/kg.
Agents and buyers alike remarked on the exceptional consistency of pricing across the Hereford offering, with only minor variation between pens. Most Hereford steers traded comfortably between 480–500c/kg, underpinned by a deep and diverse buying gallery representing four states.
Grown Hereford steers made from 464–508c/kg, averaging 489c/kg or $1,536/head.
Hereford weaner steers returned 455–514c/kg, averaging 483c/kg or $1,664/head.
The Champion Pen of Herefords was awarded to LR & RS Wheeler, whose 26 Hereford steers sold for 506c/kg or $2,084 per head. Judge Harry Comley, Ardno Herefords, Mt Gambier, praised the pen for its consistency, weight and presentation, highlighting the EU accreditation, evenness and softness of the cattle, with an average weight of 412kg.
Strong prices were also achieved by the Beerik Partnership, with Injemira, Yarram Park and Melville Park-bred steers selling to 508c/kg or $1,844 for a pen averaging 363kg. Partner Owen McClure said his cattle returned up to $500 per head more than last year, reflecting both the lift in market confidence and improved seasonal conditions through spring.
Another major Hereford run was offered by Neville and Alison McClure, Mooree Partnership, who sold 300 Hereford steers to a top of 492c/kg for a pen of 57 steers averaging 375kg, again highlighting the depth of buyer demand.
Sale wrap contributor Dylan Praolini, Southern Grampians Livestock & Real Estate, said the sale exceeded expectations for Hereford cattle, particularly given the seasonal pressures experienced from birth through to weaning. He noted strong competition from local, southern NSW and South Australian buyers, with EU-accredited Hereford lines attracting clear premiums. He also highlighted that lighter weight cattle held firm, with strong demand across all weight ranges.
Overall, the Casterton and Hamilton results reinforced strong confidence in Hereford genetics, with consistency, accreditation, temperament and proven performance driving buyer demand despite the challenges of the past season.
