Congratulations to Grace Collins for being awarded the 2024 recipient of the prestigious CM Hocking Scholarship. The scholarship will support Grace in furthering her studies as she pursues a teaching career in the agricultural industry, enabling her to fund extended periods of practicum in rural areas, refining her skills in the classroom and gain invaluable hands-on experience.
Through her connections within the Hereford breed, Grace hopes to access a diverse range of opportunities across New South Wales to enhance her learning and professional development.
“The CM Hocking Scholarship not only offers valuable financial support but also acknowledges dedication and commitment to the Hereford breed. Beyond the monetary assistance, the scholarship creates opportunities for growth, connection-building, and access to essential resources, all of which are invaluable for young individuals striving to make an impact in the industry,” said Grace.
Grace first learned about the CM Hocking Scholarship through her involvement as a Herefords Australia Youth Member. Several previous recipients within her network inspired her to apply. Being a part of Herefords Australia Youth has provided her with access to invaluable resources, mentorship, and a network of like-minded individuals who share her passion for the breed. This involvement has been instrumental in guiding her journey and strengthening her ties within the industry.
Looking ahead, Grace is excited to continue contributing to the beef cattle industry.
“I am eager to give back to the Hereford breed, sharing what I’ve learned and helping to develop the next generation of cattle industry leaders. I’m also looking forward to continuing to live and work in rural NSW and organising events with the Herefords Australia National Youth Expo committee and the Herefords Queensland Youth Affiliation committee.”
Through these platforms, she hopes to foster engagement, education, and leadership development within the industry.
In 2002, Herefords Australia received a significant legacy from the estate of the late Mrs. CM (Madge) Hocking, designated to provide an ongoing annual scholarship bursary for Australian citizens undertaking studies that will benefit the Australian Hereford industry.
Mrs. Hocking, alongside her husband ‘Hock,’ began breeding Herefords on their family farm, Oakdene, near Ocean Grove in the early 1960s. Oakdene later transformed into an award-winning winery, restaurant, and function centre, with part of the property subdivided into a residential development known as Oakdene Estate.
Devoted to her Hereford cattle and the betterment of the breed, Mrs. Hocking tirelessly worked to improve her herd, sourcing bulls from renowned studs such as South Boorook, Ardno, Midgeon, and Golf Hill. She was highly regarded for her keen eye for cattle and frequently shared her knowledge with younger generations.
The CM Hocking Scholarship embodies Mrs. Hocking’s deep-rooted passion for Herefords and her commitment to supporting young people in the industry. Her generous bequest serves as a lasting tribute to her appreciation for the Hereford breed and her desire to invest in its future leaders.
Receiving the CM Hocking Scholarship is a privilege that will significantly support Grace’s educational and professional aspirations. She is incredibly grateful for this opportunity and encourages other young individuals with a passion for Herefords and the beef industry to apply for this incredible opportunity and take advantage of the resources and support it offers.
Applications for the next round of CM Hocking Scholarship open in August 2025.
