Herefords in Demand at New Online Sale (21/02/2012)

Hereford feeder steers and joined and unjoined heifers from four states made ‘much better than going rates’ at the inaugural Herefords AuctionsPlus sale on Friday February 17 according to Colin Say & Co’s Shad Bailey who coordinated the sale.

“We were delighted with the results of this first sale which attracted 820 head and 50 registered buyers and already we have strong enquiry from potential vendors for the next sale, probably in May,” he said.

Tirranna Grazing Co averaged $900/head for 173 EU accredited 15-17 mths old steers from ‘Cowandeath’ and ‘Tirranna’ at Glen Innes, NSW.  Their lead line of 34 heavier steers weighing 471.5 kgs sold for $943 or 200c/kg while their second line of 78 at 450 kgs made $922.09 or 205c/kg with 61 lighter steers at 400 kgs made $841.47 or 210c/kg. Tirranna has been a closed Hereford herd for 62 years using predominantly Stannum and Strathleigh bloodlines.

Also making 210c/kg or $$793 were 96 steers weighing 378 kgs account Kingsgate Station, Red Range, NSW.

Topping the female section at $1450/head were 18 EU accredited PTIC heifers aged 20-22 mths account Wandong, Yeoval, NSW.

Unjoined heifers met with exceptional demand. A pen of 20 account JP Davie & Co’s Guilford herd at Ouse, Tasmania, sold for $990 to top the unjoined heifer section.  Another pen of similar heifers from the same vendor made $890/head. Listing agent for these EU accredited Tasmanian entries was RMA member Richards Livestock.

A line of 50 unjoined heifers aged 16-18 mths account Warlters Partnership, ‘Cannurilla’, Glen Innes, NSW, made $825.

The large line of 90 unjoined Ironbark blood heifers account JS & FJ Clifton, ‘Hillgrove’, Coonabarabran, NSW, made $752/head.

A pleasing aspect of the sale was that all females went as replacement breeders according to Mr Bailey.
