Hereford Scores in SA Carcase Comp (16/01/2012)

The carcase from a straight bred Hereford steer from Andrew and Vanessa Schwarz’s Oak Downs stud at Bordertown, SA, was the Reserve Grand Champion in a field of 227 steers in Southern Grassfed Carcase Classic judged at Teys Brothers Naracoorte, SA, plant late last year.

With a score of 90.319 points out of a possible 100, the Hereford carcase was less than half a point behind the top scoring carcase.

The Hereford headed the 42 strong trade steer/heifer class for 180-260 kg carcases with a maximum of two teeth and with most major breeds represented. It scored 18.5 out of 20 for market specifications, a maximum 35 for saleable meat yield and 36.819 out of 45 for MSA eating quality, the highest MSA score in the class.

This win was a great demonstration of how Herefords can perform under grass-fed conditions according to exhibitor Andrew Schwarz.

“But to continue to do demonstrate Hereford superiority, we must have more Herefords in competitions of this type,” he said.
